Hello and happy long weekend!

Picture proofs went home today.  You will need to bring them back before the end of the month.  Retakes should be happening around the 27th.  Stay tuned to announcements for retakes.  We had our French test, spelling test and math quiz today.  As many were away sick we will do make ups on all tests next week.  Chocolate sales have started.  If you want to take more home, please remember to bring back the note sent home yesterday stating:

Important information for parents of students planning to attend Camp Sagitawa:

Dear Parents:

Your child has an opportunity to sell World’s Finest Chocolates to raise money for Camp Sagitawa.  To pay their way to camp, each child needs to sell a minimum of 4 cases of the assorted gourmet chocolates.  All items will sell for only $3 each so each case of 25 items will return $75.  Parents are encouraged to supervise the selling or to ensure that the”buddy system” is employed for door-to-door sales.  You can also help by asking co-workers, family and friends to make a purchase.  Every sale helps!

This fundraiser is separate from the cookie dough sales.  Those are to raise money for other field trips and the proceeds from that are shared among all the school.  The chocolate sales are specifically for Camp Sagitawa.

Each participant is responsible for the products he or she takes to sell and for returning the $75 per case by the deadline given.  If it is possible to pre-pay for the chocolates, it would make it easier for the teachers so we don’t have to be debt collectors.  If pre-paying is not feasible, please collect the money and then send one cheque for the full amount so that we don’t spend hours counting loose change.  If sending a cheque is not feasible, please try to send cash instead of change –where possible.  Thanks for your consideration in this matter.

I would like my child to take home _____cases to sell.  I will be responsible to make sure the money is brought back by the date below.  Please send a signed note each time your child is permitted to take subsequent cases of chocolates to sell.

Thanks for helping with this fundraiser.  The top two sellers will receive movie passes and all sellers will get the reward of having earned money for Camp Sagitawa!

Please call or email if you have any questions about our fundraising.

Hello class,
Thanks to all who brought back their signed Interim reports. Please bring them soon if you haven’t yet. Also, a reminder to volleyball players….we start this week with games so remember to bring back permission slips. November meal programs are due tomorrow, Oct. 20. Spelling words were handed out too so make sure to study words each night. The test will be on Thursday this week because there is no school on Friday.  Finally, we will be doing fundraising soon.  As you already know, we are selling chocolates to raise money for Camp Sagitawa.  I expect to get them on Wednesday.  Also, as a school we will be selling cookie dough to raise money for other field trips.  Please take a look at the forms and see if you can help with that fundraiser as well.  Thanks. Hello class,
Just a reminder that we have the open house tonight at 6:30. There is a meeting at 6:00 pm if parents have questions about the wireless writing program. Our SS and Math tests are also today so hopefully everybody studied for that. Remember to bring back all forms as soon as possible. Take care and have a great long weekend as there is no school tomorrow for students.  We have ordered the chocolates and will be able to start selling as soon as they get here.  Here is a copy of the note sent home:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

September 24, 2009

This letter is to provide more information about our plans to attend Camp Sagitawa at Moberly Lake.  The dates booked for this activity are June 16, 17, and 18, 2010.  The classes involved are:

  • Mr. Read’s grade 5/6
  • Mr. Peterson’s grade 6/7
  • Mr. Longley’s grade 6/7

In order to make this possible, we are requesting the help of students and families in participating in our fundraiser by selling World’s Finest Chocolates. We need to raise approximately $4,000.00 per class and to pay for all expenses, food, lodging, transportation, and activities.  If each student sells 4 cases of chocolates, they will have earned their portion of the trip.

We will have prizes for the top three sellers who go the “extra mile” and sell more than their share.  Any extra money will go towards our graduation dance and other year-end activities.  It is our hope that all students will attend camp and that all will participate in this fundraiser, however, if you do not want to do the fundraiser, the cost to attend camp will be $150.00.

Please email kpeterson@prn.bc.ca or visit the school and ask for Mr. Peterson if you have any questions or concerns about these plans.  This will be the third year in a row we have done the camp and every year it has been a huge success.  Working towards the goal of an anticipated activity has brought classes together as they learn the importance of planning, working, and then ultimately receiving the end reward.

Thank you,

Mr. Peterson, Mr. Read, Mr. Longley

Here is a copy of another letter I sent home with students:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to another school year.  We have a lot of exciting plans for the grade six and sevens at Duncan Cran Elementary.  As you know, next fall grade sevens will be at Dr. Kearney in a new middle school model.  We wanted to make the final year at Duncan Cran special for this year’s class.  Here are a few things to look forward to:

Class Parties:

Each time the class as a whole reaches 2500 points we will have a party.  They earn points by getting their agendas signed, doing classroom and school monitor jobs, math games, and other team related accomplishments.  I have found that by putting students on a team, earning points, and reaching goals, that the classroom community is more fun and also more organized.  We may occasionally have parties at the school in the evening (i.e. 6-9pm) play video games projected onto the big screen and/or watch a movie projected onto the wall of the gym.

Dances:

We typically hold dances several times during the school year and the older classes are responsible for planning, decorating, and music.  Stay tuned for dances at Halloween, Valentines, and a year-end graduation dance.

Birthday Cakes:

Each month we celebrate birthdays by having a cake for those members of the class whose birthday falls in that month.  So far we have celebrated Kerwin’s and my birthdays in the month of September.  Mrs. Peterson makes the cakes and they are always very delicious!

Camp Sagitawa:

We will be going to camp again this year and Mr. Longley and Mr. Read’s classes will be joining us on that adventure.  To raise money for the trip, all three classes will be involved in fundraisers.  We plan to sell chocolate almonds.  Please look for ways to support this effort by taking chocolates to work or by helping your child with door-to-door selling.  I always recommend that they go with a friend or family member if they choose the door-to-door option.  Stay tuned for further information on Camp Sagitawa booked for June 16-18, 2010.

Class Blog:

You can go to the blog site at  http://karlpeterson.edublogs.org/ to see what major assignments are due and to get an update on what has been going on in the class.  Dates and deadline reminders will be posted on the blog site for upcoming tests, reports, speeches, science fair projects etc.  There is also a comment feature which links directly to my email address.

I plan to help coach sports teams again this year.  I will likely do the girls A volleyball and basketball, as well as track and field for grades 3-7 boys and girls.

Feel free to email me with at any time to check in with how your child is doing.  My address is kpeterson@prn.bc.ca and all comments posted on the blog will be automatically emailed to me as well.

I am looking forward to a great year and to helping your child achieve their fullest potential.

Sincerely,

Mr. K. Peterson

Stay tuned for more announcements as they come.  The open house will be Thursday, September 24 at 6:30PM.

Hello everyone,

Most of the speeches have been completed.  Congratulations to Teddy and Kaleb who will be representing our class at the school speech competition on Tuesday.  A reminder to everyone that our novel study is due to be handed in by Wednesday, May 13th by 3:00 PM.  Also, track and field is starting shortly.  Anyone interested in doing that needs to try to do some extra running on their own time.  A good place to do that is at the high school track because it is nearby and is a better surface than our school’s field.  Also, please remember to bring back all chocolate money ASAP.  Have a great long weekend!  I will see most of you on Wednesday as I will be in Dawson Creek on Monday and Tuesday with the leadership conference.  Mr. Stefiuk will be the teacher on those two days.

Hello!  Welcome back after a very nice Spring and Easter holiday.  We are starting the final countdown until the end of the year.  There are a lot of exciting things to look forward to.  Camp Sagitawa is looming on the June horizon.  Please bring back all money for chocolates by May 1 so we can get our finances in order.  I will be making a deposit on that shortly.  This week is going to be our turn to keep the grounds clean.  We will be going out with rubber gloves and bags and doing some playground litter cleaning during the week.  Our school is also having a band concert Wednesday and a cultural activity Thursday.  Earth Day is Wednesday and everyone is encouraged to wear green on that day.

Agenda items:

  • Socials Test – Ancient China – Tuesday (anyone missing that can make it up on Wednesday or Thursday, but please make that arrangement with me so I don’t have to track you down to get it done.
  • Science Test – (moved to Thursday because of the concert on Wednesday)
  • Math – complete all mean, median, and mode assignments from the text.
  • Novel study – Sections 1-3 to be done by Thursday.  Cover folder to be well on its way by the end of the week.  Make sure all reading is done at home if it is not completed during D.E.A.R. and that the novel is brought back to school each day if it does go home.
  • Remember to bring back hot dog orders by Wednesday for the Friday hot dog day.
  • Have a great Tuesday and Good Luck Canucks in tonight’s hockey game vs. the St. Louis Blues!

I am writing this from Vancouver.  I hope the class has a good Friday.  I am glad Mr. Stefiuk was able to be the one who came in.  Congratulations to the boys for winning their game on Thursday.  The girls also won on Tuesday so congrats to them too.  Friday, will be a chance to complete any unfinished portions of the Science Fair backboards and to get a lot of work done on the Egypt reports.  I am glad you are enjoying the book Hunger Games.  Thanks for bringing it in Holly.  I like it too!   Right now on my trip I am reading The Host by Stephenie Meyer.  It is pretty good too.   Have a great weekend and keep working hard.  See you on Monday!

Agenda items:

  • Keep finishing up Science Fair projects at home.  Many are very close to being completed.
  • Social Studies Egypt reports are due Friday, Feb. 13th
  • Math homework tonight:  Pages 204-206  ”Area of a Triangle”
  • Book orders are due Feb. 09, 2009
  • Remember to bring back chocolate almond money and to try to sell now during the warmer weather.
  • Due to behavior problems during Fine Arts – Drama, I will be monitoring the class at that time and there may have to be some consequences such as parents visiting to sit with their children during this time.  Ms. Logeman teaches this class and is still having a hard time getting the class to show sufficient respect in order to do the fun activities she has planned.  I have tried lectures, lines, missing gym, office referrals and time outs, but the behavior hasn’t changed that much while I am out of the room on my prep time.  Today I asked the class to try to self-regulate and to not “feed off” of those who try to disrupt the class.  They all agreed so we’ll see how next Tuesday’s prep time goes.  It is hard for me because I need my prep time to do marking etc. and I can’t be monitoring their behavior all the time.  It is too bad for those students who are always respectful to not get to do the fun projects because of the disrespect of a few of their classmates.

Agenda items:

  • Science fair projects need to be worked on at home to complete the testing part of the hypothesis.  That should be done ASAP so that the procedure, results, graphs, charts, and conclusions can be typed out and put onto the backboards.
  • Backboards should be brought to school by Wednesday so we can spend that class time putting paper on them and decorating.  This can be done at home too, but is easier at school if you don’t have your own supplies.
  • Chocolate almonds sales are going well.  Remember to bring back $$.  Thank you to those who send a cheque for the whole amount.  It saves me a lot of time in counting coins!
  • Hoops for hope is this Friday.  Anyone wishing to participate in that can do so by collecting pledges and returning them to me by Friday.
  • Math homework:  pages 186-187  and there will be Math club on Wednesday for one hour for anyone needing extra help.  Test will be on Thursday for the chapter on percent.

Tonight is our class party from 7-9pm.  We will be playing video games (rated E for Everyone or T for Teen, but nothing M or higher)  We will also watch the 3-D movie “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” Teams have been assigned to bring various snacks and pop etc.  I will be providing the hotdogs, buns and toppings.  Remember to bring a permission slip with you if you haven’t handed one in yet.  A few agenda items:

  • Chocolate Almonds to be sold.  This is a good way to earn money for year end activities such as Camp Sagitawa.
  • Prizes for top sellers:
  1. There will be prizes for the top sellers combining profits from cookie dough and almond sales.
  2. Prizes will be awarded to the top 4 sellers as a special “thank you” for your efforts.  Just remember though that even if you are not a top 4 seller, you still get the reward of fun year-end activities so in essence, everyone is a winner!
  3. Prizes will be chosen from the following list:

Hello class!  Christmas concerts are now done.  We had a lot of compliments on how nice our song sounded and how well those in the play parts performed!   Thanks to those who tried hard and did their best effort in that!  We are on board with chocolate almond sales!  Those wishing to sell can pick up their cases prior to the holidays.  I figure if everyone sells 3-4 cases each, we should be able to meet our fundraising goals for Sagitawa and other year-end activities.  There are 25 boxes per case and they sell for $3.00 each so $75.00 needs to be returned with each case taken home.  Already today, there were two cases sold by Brittany and Tiffany between after school and the concert!  Keep up the good work!  See you all tomorrow.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Stefiuk today.  We had cake to celebrate the birthdays this month.  Also born in November are:  Janyce, Tiffany, and Korey.  Hopefully everyone had a fun Halloween.  The dance seemed to be a big hit and there were lots of comments from other teachers and students about how well they liked it.  Everyone did a good job in helping to make it a success.  I will post a class Halloween picture soon!

Agenda items:

  • Math test tomorrow – mixed fractions. Do pages 84-85 #’s3,4,6,12 & 13 for review.
  • Book orders for November are due Nov. 14th – Remember to get parent permission before ordering from the Teen Readers Club magazine as some titles are listed with an “M” rating for some mature content.
  • Several students are missing assignments:  Tobacco Speech, Profile, Cartoon.  Their names are on the board in class.  If they are not handed in this week, “I” grades will be given.  These become an “F” at report card time if they are not handed in.
